"You're Not Alone" - DOJ Publication Features Survivors of Abduction
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a subsection of the Department of Justice, recently released a new publication meant to offer support and guidance to survivors of abduction. "You're Not Alone: The Journey from Abduction to Empowerment" features the stories of five amazing young people who were abducted and later recovered. Each of the authors offers his or her story and - more importantly - the people and practices that helped him or her make sense of the world and begin to heal. Two of the authors will also be contributing to Missing, Abducted, and After, G.W. Medical Publishing's upcoming text on abduction and related issues.
I'm always impressed by those who, at such a young age, are able to convert the short-lived media attention bestowed upon them into an opportunity to advocate for others who may be in a similar position. Moreover, several of these young people have been instrumental in reforming or introducing legislation meant to protect potential victims and punish those responsible for these crimes.
Authors: Tamara Brooks, Sam Fastow, Alicia Kozakiewicz, Maggie Maloy, and Elizabeth Smart.
Labels: Child Advocate
